Rescuers Find Five Divers Alive
Rescuers found five Japanese women weak but alive Monday in a four-day ordeal where they went missing from a diving site known for fierce currents off the Indonesian island of Bali, police reported. Two other missing divers remained unaccounted for.
The divers were spotted by local fisherman, waving from atop a cliff on Nusa Penida, a small islet located between Bali and Lombok island, said Nyoman Suarsika, chief of local police encompassing the area. A helicopter dropped food and water to the divers, who were expected to be suffering from dehydration.
The helicopter plucked one of the women to safety and the others were helped to speedboats which took them to Sanur, near Denpasar, the island's largest town, where they were placed on stretchers and into ambulances and taken to hospital, said I Ketut Supartha, chief of police in Sanur. He described them as appearing in shock.
``They are very weak,'' Mr. Supartha said. ``We could not take them to Denpasar at high speed because it would have been dangerous for their health.''
Police and rescuers had been combing the waters between Bali and Lombok after receiving a report Friday evening that seven divers had gone missing. They had been exploring waters near Nusa Lembongan, one of three islets along with Nusa Penida in the channel, during heavy rain and strong wind, which increased the danger, dive operators said.
Five of the divers were tourists and two were instructors of Yellow Scuba, which organized the dive and caters primarily to a Japanese clientele. Many of the dive operators on Bali are run by foreigners working with international tourists, the island's primary industry.
The rescued divers were identified by officials as Saori Furukawa, one of the dive instructors, and tourists Aya Morizono, Atsumi Yoshidome, Emy Yamamoto and Tomita Nahomi. Officials declined to confirm the identities of the still-missing divers. They had previously listed another instructor, Shoko Takahashi, and guest Ritsuka Miyata, among the missing.
``They sustained bruises, could still talk, but they were hungry and suffering from hypothermia,'' said Gede Surya, a staff operational officer at the Bali Search and Rescue Agency. ``We will continue to search for the two missing.''
Over the past decade, Bali's popularity has soared among foreign divers. Nusa Lembongan is known for its spread of coral reefs and good visibility, but also for very strong currents that require advanced diving skills. Police urged diving operators in 2012 to stop taking divers to the site after one Japanese and one Danish tourist were killed while diving there.
Murfi Chan, owner and operational manager of Bali Aqua Diving, predicted that any negative impact on the local dive industry would be temporary.
"Although diving has some risks, it's safe so long as you follow the procedures, master the knowledge, and know the diving sites well," Mr. Chan said. "Bali has more than 50 diving sites that are safe."
Manta Point, not far from where the divers were found, is known for sightings of giant manta rays, mola-mola and oceanic sunfish. The main diving season is May to November.
The number of foreign tourists rose to 3.3 million people in 2013 from 2.8 million the previous year, attributed largely to increasing visitors from China.
