Dear Fellow Diver ,
Many worlds changed on the 26 th of December. What is normally a joyous time of the year turned horrific as tsunamis hit south and Southeast Asia. I, as I am sure many of you did as well, tuned into the television coverage and watched, distraught, as the extent of the damage and loss of life became apparent.
As a diver, I was doubly disturbed – amongst the hardest hit areas were some of the world’s finest dive destinations, areas that I’ve been to and areas that I’ve seen underwater. And, it is as divers that we’ve pulled together to support those affected by the tragedy.
The scale of the destruction defies description and comprehension but requires action. The international community has been quick to respond with relief and private contributions have closely followed. To that end I’m proud to report that PADI Members and divers have joined together to help the victims of this tragedy.
First and foremost, PADI established a tsunami relief fund through Project AWARE Foundation and committed $70,000 AUD to the cause. Contributions to the fund go directly to help with environmental cleanup and restoration efforts. You can help by donating to the tsunami cleanup and restoration efforts .
PADI has also organized a task force devoted to the needs of PADI Members directly affected. We have staff on the ground in the affected areas as I write this. The task force has been working constantly to ascertain the status of members in the tsunami region by contacting them directly. Task force members are creating customized member assistance packages to ensure uninterrupted PADI membership, ongoing promotions, and advertising and to replace some of the lost PADI materials. PADI is dedicated to providing those left in the wake of this disaster with the support necessary to continue with their livelihood.
Although it might seem to be unimportant in the face of such a tragedy, tourism – and scuba diving in particular – is the lifeblood of many of these areas. When it comes to recovery and rebuilding, nothing will help more than an infusion of divers. To help publicize accurate travel advisories and help direct tourism back into affected areas, PADI is facilitating dive travel updates at www.padi.com . Diving, especially in this case, does matter. It matters to the local people who provide the service and, in turn, depend upon it for their livelihood. With this in mind, please support and patronize PADI Members in the region. Destinations that are prepared to receive visitors are depending upon the traffic to survive.
I remember the times that I visited the affected areas. The people, the dives and the scenery are etched into my mind. Now, I know I’ll be doing my part to help when I go back and head underwater once again.

Thailand
The Thailand Tourism Authority reports the impact of the tsunami on hotels and property to be approximately 25%, of which only 12,000 rooms are damaged out of the total of 48,000 rooms. The damage in Khao Lak and Phi Phi Island is the most severe.
Phuket
80% of the hotels are unaffected and full operational. 10% have damages, which can be repaired with 1-2 weeks. All major roads are still open and water and electricity supplies - except in a few small areas where damage was heaviest - are continuous and strong.
Nai Yang Beach
Heavy damage, clean up operation in full swing.
Nai Thon Beach
Nominal damage, resorts are open for business.
Layan Beach
Heavy damage to the beach area, however, there is little development resulting in minimal structural damage. Resort is open for business.
BangTao Beach
Heavy damage at the south end of the beach. Area resorts not located at the south end claim to be operational by month end.
Surin Beach
Nominal damage, already back to business as usual.
Kamala Beach
Heavy damage. Many resorts (but not all) are closed until further notice.
Kalim Beach
Heavy damage, currently under repair. Some resorts open.
Patong Beach
Sporadic damage, ranging from heavy to nominal. Many resorts are open and operational.
Karon Beach
Nominal damage. Many resorts received no damage and are open and operational.
Kata Beach
Nominal damage. Some resorts are open and operational.
Nai Harn Beach and Environs
Sporadic damage ranging from heavy to nominal. Many resorts in the area are reporting minimal damage and are open and fully operational.
Rawai Beach
Moderate but extensive damage along the sea wall, but the beach road remained open throughout. Some resorts are open and operational.
Chalong and Ao Yon Beaches
Moderate to nominal damage. Many resorts are open and operational.
Phuket City and Koh Sirey
No damage to the
Heavy to nominal damage. Some businesses open and operational.
Khao Lak /Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province
Significant damage to all hotels and infrastructure. All hotels are currently closed.
Krabi
Only a few select areas were affected, due to a protective wall that has been in place for a long time. 90% of the hotels are not damaged. Some minor disruptions to the infrastructure (electricity/roads/telecoms/transportation), while final repairs are being made.
Koh Phi Phi
Significant damage to most hotels and infrastructure. Currently has only 3 fully operational resorts.
All other areas
The following areas are not affected:

All essential services such as water (the reservoirs are located on the hills and are not contaminated by any seawater) and electricity supply are not affected; roads, shopping malls, shops, hospitals, schools etc are operating as normal.
The infrastructure on both islands is intact.

Maldives - All
Moderate to nominal damage. Out of the 87 resort islands in the Maldives, 63 resorts are now in operation; 20 resorts are closed due to varying degrees of damage caused by the tsunami; and 4 resorts were under construction before the incident. Business is generally back to normal.

以个人接触的资料,包括网上,传媒,亲身和朋友所得,"出海的船"所引述PADI概括的报道是挺中肯和客观(可惜没有中文). 由於电子报纸传媒倾向集中严重灾区报道,例如北苏门塔纳(North Sumatra),斯里兰卡东岸(Sri Lanka),攀牙(Phangnga)等,少有报道未受影响或影响轻微的. 令不少人误以为整个印尼,斯里兰卡,泰国都成灾区,对一些地理旅游常识不多的朋友,更易产生误解. 未能正确了解旅游资讯,这是令人可惜的.
谢谢出海的船为大家寻找中立报告。大家也可到DAN和红十字会网站参阅。大家也可到中、美、澳、加、英等国家外交部网站或香港政府网页参考他们什样评估去海啸遇难区旅游的安全情况。我相信这比个人单说的私人感受或评价中立和可信度高。
谢谢各位提供的有用信息.不知道现在布吉海底的情况怎么样呢?如果情况可以的话,我打算三月中后者四月初过去考个证.三月底去埃及,红海是一定要下一下的,但是我没有证,那边应该有人带吧?希望赶得及去之前考.
现在布吉的情況无论陆上或海底和海啸前沒什么分別. 只是游客少了,像淡季一样
有兴趣的可到另一位网友的游记.

我个人在看募捐大会的的时候就有感触。。。。其实怎样的捐助都是一时的。真正对这些地区最好的帮助就是继续去这些地区旅行。。。。这些受灾地区大都是旅游业为主支撑的的产业。。我们继续去旅行，就是最好，最长久的RECOVER的支持。
谢谢楼上的朋友及小平兄鼎这个贴子。前天听到马耳代夫曾住过的一个偏远的岛被海啸彻底摧毁，心中一片暗淡。秀丽的景色（人们称之为天堂），美好的下潜（海沟中丰富多彩几近完美），热情的人们（土族和来自世界个地的员工，酒店还请我们推荐国内员工到岛上接待日益增多的国人），豪爽的朋友（他们2003年买下这个岛，全部改造2004年底才完成），传奇般的经历（凌晨五点我坐的快船尽管有雷达导航系统却以全速撞上了一艘装满货物和几十个妇女儿童的货船，撞船前瞬间驾驶员绝望的惊叫，在茫茫的印度洋上惊恐的哭嚎，丧失的慌乱，孤立无援的恐惧终生难忘。）以蒙泰奇的形式在我脑海中翻来覆去，牵动着我呼唤着我。我渴望尽快回到那些潜过的受灾潜点。
也谨以此文寄托我的怀念并呼唤同道中人尽快回到灾区潜点潜水。
马耳代夫也是受灾和旅游人数大幅下跌影响很严重地区之一. 海嘯是天灾,不太正确的传媒报道是人禍,令这些旅游天堂和友善居民受着生活困扰,也令一些想去体验一下天堂的朋友卻步.
你的经历,体验和理解是很直得人欣賞的, 谢谢分享. 但愿更多朋友都能有这福气
