MacLehose Trail ( 5.21-23, completed)

Brief Introduction

It is hard to believe that, just beyond Kowloon, Hong Kong has rugged peaks, remote valleys, and ocean coastlines. Or that in these places there is striking natural beauty - and surprising ecological diversity. The MacLehose Trail, a 100 kilometre-long Country Parks hiking trail, winds through this region. Generally crossing higher land, the ten-stage Trail offers memorable countryside experiences - and the adventure of sustained hiking. The New Territories, through which the MacLehose Trail runs, covers the vast majority of the SAR land area. Here is Hong Kong most varied - and finest - countryside. The east coast, where the Trail begins, is deeply indented and wild. The central mountains, which the MacLehose Trail crosses, include many of Hong Kong highest peaks. And the western part, where the Trail winds to its end, has impressive valley reservoirs.

The 100km trail is divided as follow:

Stage Route Length (km) Journey Time (hr) Difficulty
1 Pak Tam Chung to Long Ke 10.6 3 *
2 Long Ke to Pak Tam Au 13.5 5 **
3 Pak Tam Au to Kei Ling Ha 10.2 4 ***
4 Kei Ling Ha to Tai Lo Shan 12.7 5 ***
5 Tai Lo Shan to To Po Road 10.6 3 **
6 Tai Po Road to Shing Mun 4.6 1.5 *
7 Shing Mun to Lead Mine Pass 6.2 2.5 **
8 Lead Mine Pass to Twisk 9.7 4 **
9 Twisk to Tin Fu Tsai 6.3 2.5 *
10 Tin Fu Tsai to Tsuen Mun 15.6 5 *

Just back from HK. It took me 3.5 days, much more difficult than I expected. Under humid hot weather, it's easy to get dehydrated. However, the beautiful scenery more than compensated for the physical hardship. I did not expect HK has such a great hiking trail, one of the best I've seen. I'd definitely recommend to everyone here.

hongkong is a highly civilized city, but shenzhen is ruled by not- well-educated peasant officials.
on the peak of Wutong ,any one will be hurt when he sees industrial violation into the bueatiful scenery, but all is green in New Territory of HK.

I'm sorry to say that air quality in HK is better than SZ, even on HK Island or TST. Hiking in New Territory, you can see the clear blue sky. When I looked across to ShenZhen, air pollution is quite obvious. HK government has done a great job in that it only designate certain pockets of land for dwelling, and the development was done in an orderly fashion. Many beautiful beaches are not directly accessable by vehicles, which makes the preservation much easier.

However, I guess urban planning is a quite complex issue by itself, let alone the dirty politics around. I heard some statistics that SZ has a real population of 11-13 million people. Without forsight and proper planning, the rapid expansion will put a huge burden on the environment. We may have to pay a high price for our short sightedness.

I don't think many of these government officials are peasants, nor are they less educated. Rather than being civil servants, they tend to be civil masters, with no mechanisms to monitor them...I'd better shut my mouth.

BTW,I'm planning for the Lantau Island trail(aka Pheonix Trail) in HK, 70km in length. Everyone is welcome to join.

the phrase of"not- well-educated peasant officials" is just a metaphor.

sz has now reached the limit of development, but most officials donot realize the urgent situation.

We plan to complete this trail within 24 hours on November. It's amazing! :)

You must be referring to the Trail Walker event. It's a good event and I was thinking about doing it a few years ago. But I hate to bother other people for the logistic support and I don't enjoy hiking in the dark.

The weather will be much more pleasant in November but doing 100km hiking trail in 24 hours is still quite a daunting task. Just be careful not to hurt yourself, especially the knees. Don't push too hard to pass your limitation. Hats off and wish you luck.

Sure, I mean the Oxfam Trailwalker 2005.
Thank you for your reminder. Actually one of my teamates already hurt in his knees during a training. We have much training task to do in this summer. May God bless us.
