Landscape
Sipadan is a column rise from a deep sea. The sea bottom is 600M, in human point of view, it is no bottom. The island is surrounded by coral reef. The reef is many times bigger than the island. Most of the reefs are less than 10M from surface. At the edge, all are drop off and hence no bottom.
Restriction to beginners
OW are not allowed to dive below 18M. As all the sites are drop off, all OW divers could go except the depth limit. You may say you could go deeper if the DM allows to. Let me tell you guys my own experience. A beginner didn’t control his buoyancy well. He dropped deeper. He didn’t notice but found his ear painful and he closed his eyes and blew his nose. As his BCD was compressed when he sank, he sank faster and faster. I don’t want to talk about the result here but could tell you it was a diving accident with injury.
Of course, a dive shop should not put divers with different experience into a single group. However, it is no guarantee.
Precaution should be aware of are:
Different depth
If 2 or more beginners join a big group, the big group will dive deep to the ocean. It is not possible to have a small group dive at 18M but another small group dive at 30M. It is very difficult to manage two groups of people. The beginners group may stop for a school of Jacks or even a few turtles but the divers in the deep may not notice and go forward or vice versa. Secondly, the current in shallow water may differ from the deep. Anyway, one DM leads 2 groups of divers in different depth must be prohibited.
Ascent at different time (my own experience)
One sub-group (A) is more air consumed. They ascended to the surface or shallow part earlier than the other sub-group (. Group A ascended earlier did not have a SMB. After the sub-group B finished the dive, they used more than 20 minutes to locate the sub-group A. Why? It was because the current could drift the people half a km away in 10 minutes or even much faster occasionally.
You guess how many km was drifted including the searching time.
Underwater attraction
Says, you meet a school of barracuda. The group of people will rush to the school. The beginners have to follow the experience divers. The experience divers will concentrate to take photos or videos and ignore the beginners. What would happen if the current is so strong that some people can kick against the current but some cannot. The group will be split.
Many incidents can be easily handled by experienced divers but will be a lethal or scary accident to a beginner. For example: gear malfunction, strong current, concentration in photography, equalization problem, getting lost and a lot more.
To play safe, the number of beginners should be big enough to form a single group which will lead by a DM or instructor. If there is only one beginner in a group of experienced divers, he or she has to be accompanied by a very experienced diver who can be trust. If 2 or more beginners dive with a big group, please aware of the above incidents. Or an alternative, take a AOW course, an instructor will be designated to you.

PS:cacrot
