Latest Update following our meeting with the Director of the Sabah Wildlife Department on the 11th July 2008:
On the 11th July, a further meeting was held with the Director of the Sabah Wildlife Department concerning the Camp Land issue.
Prior to the mentioned meeting, we have been informed and it was explained to us that our application and appeal to continue to remain on a long term-basis at our present location would not be possible as the land would soon be required for development by the authorities. We applied for a further extension of time pending relocation.
Following the recent meeting with the SWD Director, WE HAVE BEEN GRANTED AN EXTENSION TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE AT OUR PRESENT LOCATION UNTIL END OF 2008.
[As for our relocating plans, we have already identified two beautiful plots of land upriver to build our new Camp. We have applied for the first piece of land for alienation by the State Government and are formalising a lease agreement from a private owner for the second. The formalities regarding these new lands are being pursuit vigorously. We hope to have a new place/s by year end to continue Uncle Tan's operations. The new locations are further upriver, a little bit more "remote" and are close to the forest reserves. Our survey results show that wildlife is present in abundance]
Where we are
The closest town to us is Sandakan. Many of our visitors fly to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu. Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines serve this route.
If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, Air Asia flies direct to Sandakan.
If you are coming from the Sandakan airport, the easiest way is to hire an Airport Taxi to get to our Operations base. Taxi coupon can be purchased from the counter at the Airport. Tell the driver you want to go to Uncle Tan's NEW PLACE in Sepilok. The taxi ride would take 20-30 mins. Fare is RM 40.00.
Our New B&B and Operations Base is situated in Sepilok, nearby the Orang Utan Centre.
We are the first Tour Operator premise on the Sepilok Road. Heading towards the Orang Utan Centre, we are on the right-hand side, a couple of hundred metres from the main road Junction/Circle.
If you are coming by express bus from KK/Mountain/Tawau/Lahad Datu/Semporna, get the bus driver to drop you off at the Sepilok Junction/Circle. This is at Mile 14. From this point, you will be close to our New B&B and Operations Base. It would take a few minutes walk along the Sepilok Road to get to our place from the Junction/Circle.
Trips to Uncle Tan's Wildlife Camp
Departures to Uncle Tan's Wildlife Camp at the Kinabatangan River are arranged from our Operation Base/B&B premises. As we would require to make prior arrangements and co-ordination for the trip, we ask that visitors come to our Operation Base/B&B first.
Trips to the Camp are on daily basis. Visitors are advised to be at our Operation Base/B&B premises at about 1:00 noon. This will give enough time for lunch, coffee and registration. The tour will depart for the Camp at about 2:30 p.m.
[Please Note: The Wildlife Camp is at the Kinabatangan River. Our Operations Base/B&B is in the Sepilok area, nearby the Orang Utan Centre. These are 2 different places - quite apart in distance from each other. Visitors come to our Ops Base first. We then organise things and leave at 2:30 p.m. for the Kinabatangan river by van en route to Camp. At the river, our boats will then take visitors to Camp]
If you do the Standard 3D/2N or the 5D/4N Camping add-on, on the day you leave Camp, you will arrive back at our Ops Base at about 12:30 noon. Lunch will be provided at our Ops Base.
How much does it cost?
The cost for the Standard 3D/2N trip is RM 320.00 per person. Subject to availability of space, extended stay is possible. The cost for each day extended is RM 60.00 per person.
The price is ex our Ops Base/B&B in Sepilok and it covers transportation by van to and from the Kinabatangan River, transportation by boat to and from the Camp, all river Safaris, jungle treks, accommodation in camp huts, 3 meals a day (B,L,D), coffee/tea available all day plus some tea time snacks and biscuits. There are no hidden costs, no guide fees, no surprises - as plain as that.
The things you may want to purchase from our staff co-operative* would be beer, bottled water and soft drinks.
*[At Camp, our staff co-operative sells beer, canned drinks and bottled drinking water. Rubber boots are also available for rent. Income earned by the staff co-operative goes to the staff. The company takes no commission or percentage from the co-operative. The co-operative is the staff's little business that the company allows them to conduct]
