Pangaea's construction
Over 22,000 hours of design time and years of experience and marine expertise have come together in the remarkable sailboat Pangaea.
Pangaea has been specially designed and adapted to integrate the latest sustainable technologies and keeps safety for its crew and passengers a top priority at all times.
Pangaea is built to conform to Mike Horn’s specific requirements and needs, creating an environment where people from all walks of life can meet and share the same passion and objectives. The boat will be used for research, environmental and educational projects at its ports of call around the world. It will be capable of going into difficult territories and will be equipped with the necessary tools to fulfill its mission.
Pangaea is a 35-metre sailing vessel that sleeps 30 people and features the latest communication technology and conference facilities. It also includes BlueTec engines, solar panels, recyclable aluminum hull and trawling nets for bottles and a number of other ecofriendly sustainable features.
As the mission statement of the Pangaea Expedition is to enhance a respect of the environment, the boat had to be built in an environmental friendly way and had to be ready to integrate most of the tools to produce energy with the lowest possible emission and pollution.
The first step was to choose the right material to build the boat. Aluminum was the obvious one. Technically it performs very well in extreme temperatures. It is very light resistant and durable. Furthermore, aluminum is the most recyclable metal. It can be recycled many times without loosing its qualities. Recycling aluminum uses only 5% of the energy required to produce it.
Throughout Mike Horn’s previous expeditions, progress was made through natural means and human power. For this reason his dream was to build a boat that will encompass this philosophy. A sailing vessel whose main motors will be 600 sq metres of sail. As this boat will navigate the Polar Regions, it was necessary to have motors to travel through the sea ice. Engines with low emissions were chosen in order to keep true to the expedition’s philosophy.
The boat is equipped with two lighting systems, one providing standard lighting and the other pilot or dimmed light that will save on energy. LED bulbs will be used – they give stronger light output with reduced voltage requirements.
In order to produce the required energy on board, two eco-friendly systems have been put in place. The top side of the cockpit will be covered with solar panels. The output of amps will be sufficient enough to charge the batteries of the boat. But as the solar energy is quite difficult to store over a long period of time (even with the help of batteries), the boat will also have a system comprising an electrolyser, hydrogen storage and a fuel cell. The solar panels will be used to give energy to the electrolyser to break the molecules of water into hydrogen and oxygen molecules. These will be stored and become the fuel that will be used to produce electricity within the fuel cell whenever needed. In that way, the sun will be the only source of energy and the boat will be largely self-sufficient.
The last step is to have an eco-friendly way of life onboard. Recycling will be a priority. The kitchen has been designed to have compartments for wastes such that they are sorted and ready to be recycled each time the boat makes a stop in a harbor. The boat will also be equipped with large nets and a working area to receive bottles and plastic bags that will be taken out of the water and transported to be recycled.
Pangaea has a media and broadcast centre onboard equipped with the latest technology allowing the creation of high quality broadcast content. Communication from anywhere in the world will be possible. The multimedia centre will enable live TV transmission and production, from TV broadcast to Web content. Among the capabilities will be post-production of audio and video content on different workstations, professional HD Video, audio and DVD creation, content storage, content conversion, content copying, content backup, video conferencing and IT infrastructure with office applications, e-mail, internet and instant messaging using intranet.
A 16-seat conference room with round table will allow guests to congregate, discuss projects, watch films and make live video conference calls either with Mike Horn, on the terrain, or with other boardrooms around the world.

May 16th, 2009
Our YE’s woke up this morning, bright and early in their new surroundings of the Pangaea sailboat. Today would be their first full day in the Southland town of Bluff!
Phillippa, Pangaea's cook, made for them a hearty breakfast of hot oats, an appropriate meal to start the cold, wet day that lay ahead of them.
At 10 am, our team headed off to Invercargill to visit a Marae, the local meeting place of the Maori people. Tradition has it that women walk first into the Marae and men follow them. Shoes and hats are removed. We, the guests, sat at one side of the Marae, while the local people sat on the other side. An introduction in Maori language was given and some people sang. Afterwards, it was for us, the guests, to talk and sing. Jun and Alisa, both sang in their own languages, while inbetween the two songs, Mike Horn gave a brief speech to thank them for their welcome.
After the official procedures were over, we were offered tea and the Maori people shared with us their local songs and taught us how to do the haka. It was a wonderful introduction to the Maori people and traditions and an amazing exchange of cultures was seen between the local people and out multicultural group of Young Explorers.
Back onboard the boat in the afternoon, a tour was given with Captain Nick and our YE's got a full introduction of Pangaea and the safety procedures.
After a good dinner the YE's gave us their impression of the day and the planning for the next day was discussed. Weather permitting, we plan to leave in the afternoon after an introduction to the environmental project that the YE will conduct on Coal Island - The real adventure will start tomorrow when we leave behind us all civilization and start sailing!

Another early wake up for our YE's in New Zealand. They are slowly beginning to recover from their jetlag and are getting used to their new environment with Pangaea and her crew.
Today was 'Preparation Day' for our Young Explorers. They prepared for their departure to the Fiords and packed up the equipment in the boat's garage for the ACT project that they would be carrying out on Coal Island.
At 11am, they were given a short presentation from the people of the Department of Conservation and the South West New Zealand Endangered Species Charitable Trust, about the ACT or Coal Island Project that the YE's will be working on for the next few days. A lot of questions were asked by our interested group. Never before had they done something like this and they were very happy to be able to contribute back to the environment by helping the endangered species thrive in this region.
At 1pm, lunch was eaten all together in the boats conference room. This would be the last lunch before their departure for the Southland fjords. At 4pm the mooring lines were released and Pangaea left Bluff.
The first few hours were rough with wind gusts of up to 30 knots and large swells. Our YE's quietened down most considerably but not for long. A few hours later they had all recovered and were helping with the navigation.
Pangaea will spend the night on anchor in a sheltered cove close to Cove Island and the work for the Coal Island project will start tomorrow morning bright and early.

where the fresh water for man use comes from?
how they use water and get out of it when toiling and personal cleanning?
how they sleep?
how to get out of dizziness on board when sleeping or at wake?
where the garbage to be dealed and how?
- fresh water container is fulled in in each harbour. We as well have a
desalinator system onboard to create fresh water from sea water.
- there are normal toilets, normal taps and shower. They must be careful and
save water as much as possible.
- they sleep in bank beds : 3 beds on the tops of each (see pictures from
antarctica Expedition).
- to avoid beeing sick , the best is to eat enough and if you don't feel
well => if possible go outside to get some fresh air. If really not feeling
well, the doctor will give them some medication.
- everything that can be recycled is and the other garbage is kept and
thrown away in the harbours.

Today Young Explorers ACT ! - Taken from a blog by Young Explorer, Raphael Gabella.
As you may know, the slogan of Pangaea’s project is to “explore, learn and act”. Here in the Fiordlands, we are learning a lot and with people who know it better than anyone else. Carl David Rundgren (otherwise known as Dolphin Dave), a marine biologist with 25 years experience is also with us on Pangaea and sharing his knowledge of this beautiful region.
The ACT project on Coal Island - This project started in 2005 with the help of volunteers, such as the like of us. It has been supported over the years through funding by the Department of Conservation. Two people from this department are here to help us today. The aim of the project on Coal Island is to create a safe haven for endangered native species.
Coal Island was visited first by the early Maori. In addition, gold was discovered in 1874.
Our goal for the day is to continue the control of introduced species such as rats, mice and stoats who are preying on birds. Our mission is to explore this island and replace the old traps with new traps and bait (eggs). There are 132 traps on the island, and of course, any rubish we see we must also remove.
We started cleaning the island and changing the traps at 9 o’clock this morning. We finished at four o’clock in the afternoon. During this time, we were walking in the forest the entire time. It was awesome! It
looks like the Amazon. It was a very long walk in the mud, where no people had been for a very long time. We saw some amazing birds like the fantail, bellbirds (korimako in maori), tui, and morepork just two meters away from us. Some of the other people were lucky enough to see the karakiki and yellowhead.
Here we realize that we have really to save our planet.
“It was successful today", said Mike Horn tonight. "We have to continue tomorrow".

Strong winds and heavy rains lashed the coast of Coal Island today making it impossible for our team of Young Explorers to return to the island to lay the last traps. This was a disappointment for the team but Mike and the crew were not prepared to take any risks. Instead, Pangaea was moved closer to the mainland where she could take shelter from the storm.
It was after lunch that Mike Horn decided to approach closer to the coastline and the Young Explorers were able to disembark onto solid ground. They explored the southern tip of the mainland amongst wild bush and forest, cascading waterfalls and incredible wildlife. Never before had they seen native bush so dense and lush. They returned back to the boat four hours later, tired but happy from everthing they had seen.
The weather should start improving tomorrow, and as soon as it does, our eager team will return to Coal Island to complete their task.

It’s the start of my night watch on Pangaea. As I stay awake taking care of this amazing boat it struck me how much we rely on Phillipa, the cook on Pangaea. She feeds a crew of 26 people, breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food is really extremely good.
We went back to coal island today! First we started with a brisk run to the other side of the island and back!! We did it in 50 minutes - very fast! We came back via the north track and ended up on the track to Sandfly point.
On the walk back along the coast we had no urge to hurry. We wanted to take the time to enjoy the nature that surrounded us. There was indeed a sense of peace, while we walked silently, amongst the dense forest listening to the chimes of its feathered inhabitants. It was a wonderful feeling.
When we had finished, we dropped the traps off at a lodge that was once known as the town of Kisbee. There is nothing left of the town today, except an old boiler and the tram line, the remnants of the gold rush.
Afterwards it was time for general discussion and yet another meal prepared by Phillippa.
Our day was a successful one and we were happy to be back once again at Pangaea, our floating home and haven.

May 21st, 2009
Taken from a blog of Raphael Gabella
"We left from Preservation Inlet this morning and sailed to Dusky Sound. Pangaea's sails were up and the Young Explorers either had to participate with the stearing the boat or pulling the sails up. After about 5 hours we reached the spectacular Dusky Sound where we went to anchor at the same spot where Captain Cook moored his boat in 1770 after he came back from Antarctica.
We went on shore during the afternoon to fish and find fod for the evening. We were quite succeseful and found lots of mussels and some great fish.
After dinner, we went out and walked throught the forest for around 1 hour. We eventually reached a small camp that the Mike Horn team had set up in the afternoon. Tonight the Young Explorers are spending their first night under the tents in the forest."

Taken from a blog of Jun Lee - The dolphins!
There is no signal for telephone or internet where we are now, nor any other boats to be seen, so you can imagine how isolated we suddenly feel, here in the fiords of Southland.
Instead of human civilization we are surrounded by the most stunning nature and wildlife. As luck would have it, this morning, we came across an amazing sight, one of human's closest friends, the dolphin!
Late in the morning, around 10 AM, Pangaea arrived with full sail into the Dusky Sound. The weather was the best we had had so far. The sunshine was beaming down and flickering upon the sea and there was a gentle, cool breeze and thin clouds. During winter the South Island of New Zealand is seldom forecasted without rain or cold temperatures! Yes, don`t forget it is now winter in New Zealand and temperatures are often below 10°C.
All of the Young Explorers and Mike Horn Team came up on deck when we reached the middle of the sound. And there they were! At the beginning, there were just two or three dolphins playing in the distance, but as time passed little by little, more of them emerged from the deep sea and came closer to us, showing absolutely no fear! We could easily see their immense, smooth bodies through the clear sea! You cannot imagine how happy we were - what excitment!
Dolphins are very social mammals, as Dave, the Marine Biologist told us. We could see the mothers accompaning their calves and then later others would come and join the group.
The most important part of our scientific observation was to see whether they had nicks on their dorsal fin. Usually the nicks are bite marks made by the calves, with which the conservationists can identify them and count their numbers.
There is a saying that states, 'the more you see, the more you want to see', but instead of over-staying our welcome, we decided to leave and no disturb the dolphins any further. It's very important not to interefere and to leave nature as you find it. Afterall, we were just passers-by and had already experienced a very privileged moment!

1、请阅读之前关于帆船的特别介绍博客;

May 26th, 2009
Satellite call from Mike. "We have reached the saddle or highest point of the Dusky Trail. It's been three days of steady walking for me and the team. We have walked about 15-20 kms each day. The bush here in the Fiordlands is amazing! What a privilege to be here and to be able to experience this with the Young Explorers!
The weather has improved but we remain well protected from the sun due to the dense bush that covers us. It is frosty in the morning and the trail has already had a good covering of snow making it really muddy and wet. This is not a deterent for the Young Explorers however-nothing will stop them!!!
Another night in the tent tonight and tomorrow we should met up with the boat in Deep Cove. I'm sure the YE's will be ready for a shower!!!"

At 17h00 local time, Mike Horn and his Pangaea team, comprising of doctor, local guides, mountain guides, photo and film crew, and 9 International Young Explorers walked out of the Fiordland dense native bush. The team had just walked four days following the Dusky Trail, from Supper Cove in the Dusky Sound to Deep Cove in the Doubtful Sound, a trek of 60 kms in snow covered vegetation and crossing a mountain saddle of 1'000meters.
They tired but happy team received a warm welcome from Pangaea's crew, who were moored and ready to greet them in Deep Cove.
Mike Horn reports, "It was an incredible feeling to be in such dense native bush and to be able to live this adventure with our Young Explorers. We were privileged to have two local guides with us, Sue and Alan, who shared with us their wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna of the region."

"Milford Sound greeted us with all her glory today," says Mike. At 17h00, Pangaea, her crew, Mike Horn and the Young Explorers sailed into the most known of the Southland fiords, the Milford Sound.
"We were blown away by the magnificent scenery as we sailed into Milford! We acknowledge how lucky we have been as we have had good weather this last week, not at all usual for this time of year! We had a magnificent day yesterday as we sailed through the Dusky Sound. We saw some dolphins, a whale and royal albatross.
Tonight we will find a sheltered spot to moor Pangaea and our team will have a good sleep. Only a few more days before our Young Explorers return to their respective countries. We have a nice few days planned for them with diving and kayaking to keep them busy."

“It was a rather sad day today”, says Mike. “At 12 noon our Young Explorers left Pangaea in Milford Sound and returned to Invercargill to get flights home to their respective countries around the world.”
“All of a sudden it's very quiet here and we are feeling rather empty. For two and a half weeks we had the enormous pleasure of sharing an amazing adventure of discovery with a group of highly motivated young adults. How privileged we all were to be able to discover the beauty of Fiordland and to learn about this incredible ecosystem.”
“What an amazing experience it was for us all to be surrounded by such breathtaking scenery, being totally cut off from civilization and yet amongst such an outstanding abundance of flora and fauna.”
“Fiordland was an ideal place for us to carry out YEP. The mission of Pangaea is to EXPLORE, LEARN and ACT with the Young Explorers and with the help of an experienced and qualified team we successfully achieved our goals.”
