Top 5s of 2008 with Garrett Reynolds

To say that 2008 has been a good year for Garrett Reynolds is an understatement, with a bunch of contest wins, (including street in X Games 14), scoring the cover of Ride 151, winning the NORA Cup Number One Street Rider, and wrapping the year up with an absurd section in the Nike 6.0 video Writing on The Wall. With such a memorable year to look back on, we asked Garrett to list a few of his top 5s from ’08.

Places you traveled to:
Australia, Barcelona [Spain], Estonia, China, and, California.
Favorite riders to watch:
Van Homan, Ty Morrow, Sean Burns, Mike Aitken, Corey Martinez.

of the photos in this article (and Garrett’s Ride cover) were shot the day after he won the X Games while he was riding with Nigel Sylvestor and they were filming with Glenn PP Milligan. We shot this gap-to-grind-to-hop over barspin at the warm up spot. Photo: Zielinski
Video part:
Sean Burns Dead Bang, Van Homan 2×4, Chase Dehart 2×4, Dakota Roche Insight, and the three way split section [with Corey Martinez, Nathan Williams, and Dakota Roche] in the Levis video.
Favorite tricks to do:
Barspins, ice grinds, trucks, 540s, [toothpick] hangovers.
Favorite contests:
Simple Sessions, X Games Street, local skateparks, and stuff when it’s chill. I like when contests are a fun scene—seeing kids send themselves and everyone just shredding having fun. That’s what it’s about.

Garrett tests out this rail with one of his favorite tricks of 2008, and I get my second photo on what will become a golden roll of film by the end of the day. Photo: Zielinski
Street spots you were really psyched on:
Downtown ten stair in Toms River, NJ, Love Park in Philly, William Penn high school in Philly, Hollywood High, and pretty much anything and everything in Barcelona—it’s the best place in the world.
Five things to look forward to in 2009:
Traveling, meeting new people, filming for the video me and my friends are working on, shredding bikes, and just having another year to ride, hang with friends, and chill.
Five sentences about your new video:
We’ll probably call it Water Street because Water Street is the main street in downtown [Tom’s River]. It’s where all of the people in the video grew up riding. But we are open to [other] names as it is not the most serious video and not the most serious dudes. It’s all about having fun and traveling—it’s cool to get a chance to travel with all of my friends from home because a lot of them don’t get to travel. It’s been fun, everyone has been getting wild and there are a bunch of funny stories already—I love that.

Ask most BMX photographers what trick is the hardest to time properly, and barspins on street could possibly be the unanimous answer, followed closely by tuck no-handers. So you can imagine how stressed out I was when Garrett did this barspin-to-icepick as his prelude to a no-hander-to-icepick. Photo: Zielinski
