1959年，西藏（不是后来的“西藏自治区”，而是原有的西藏三区——康区、卫藏、安多）的总人口约340万。
中央民族事务委员会出版的《四十年的民族工作》一书的数据：官方人口普查显示，从1953年西藏人口为278万。
1961年班禅喇嘛的万言书，提到西藏人口时说当时有“300万”。
达赖喇嘛的原话不是这样的，LP在转述（引文没有加引号，可以看做是LP自己的话）时的表述可能不太准确。达赖喇嘛1991年10月9日在美国耶鲁大学演讲时说﹕“自1950至1980年，藏人因饥饿、迫害和枪杀，死亡达120万，占全部西藏人口的五分之一，其中34万人死于饥饿，86万人死于迫害、枪杀。”
