More than a month has passed since Iranian authorities detained Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal after they strayed into Iran -- by accident, a friend and relatives say -- while hiking in northern Iraq.
Their relatives in the United States have heard nothing about their fate, they said Tuesday on CNN's "American Morning."
"We know they're being detained in Iran. Beyond that, we haven't heard anything from them," said Nora Shourd, the mother of Sarah Shourd.
The waiting takes a toll.
"It's just very difficult," said Alex Fattal, Josh Fattal's brother. "Each day feels like a month.
"It's a long time -- each hour, each day -- to not know under what conditions Josh, Shane and Sarah are being held and if they're OK."
The hikers' relatives said they hope the Iranian government lets Swiss diplomats visit the hikers. The Swiss government represents U.S. interests in Iran. The U.S. and Iran have not had diplomatic relations since the American hostage crisis of 1979.
The three Americans entered northern Iraq from Turkey on July 28 with plans for five days of hiking. Bauer and Shourd had been living in Damascus, Syria; Fattal was visiting. They set out to hike in northern Iraq's Kurdistan region with a fourth friend, Shon Meckfessel.
Meckfessel ended up staying behind at their hotel on July 31, the day the three went missing, because he had a cold, he has said. He has said his friends did not know they were near the border and made "a simple and regrettable mistake" by crossing into Iran.
Relatives have said the three "accidentally strayed into Iran across an unmarked border."
Authorities in Iran charged the three with illegally entering the country, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Thursday morning, the mothers of the three detained U.S hikers ,Laura, Nora Shourd and Cindy Hickey delivered the petitions containing 2,500 signatures to the Iranian mission.
"They accepted the petitions. We think it went well. We're encouraged that they accepted them," said Shourd. They're hoping the appeals will ultimately reach Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
"President Ahmadinejad is a father, and I think he can easily imagine how difficult it is for the families of the hikers. We very much see this as a humanitarian issue unrelated to anything else," said Fattal.
"We do have hope, we do have optimism ... we want to see action," says Fattal,.
Hickey's son Shane, a 27-year-old photojournalist, lives in Damascus, Syria with his girlfriend, 31-year-old Sarah Shourd, a teacher. In late July, 27-year-old Josh Fattal, a teaching fellow, visited them, and they went on a hiking vacation in northern Iraq. According to reports, they accidentally crossed an unmarked border into Iran.

Iran is charging three American hikers with espionage.Tehran's prosecutor general, Abbas Ja'afari Dolatabadi, announced the charges in an interview with the official Iranian news agency IRNA Monday.
The announcement of the charges comes only days after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met privately with the families of Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal, who were detained along the Iran-Iraq border at the end of July.
The three Americans have been detained since July 31 on charges of illegally crossing the border from Iraqi Kurdistan into Iran. Their family and friends say it was an innocent mistake.
Tehran's prosecutor general, Abbas Ja'afari Dolatabadi, announced the charges in an interview with the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
"The charge against the three U.S. citizens who were arrested on the Iran-Iraq border is espionage. Investigation of their cases is in progress," he told IRNA, adding: "There will be more to say [about them] soon."
Clinton repeated Monday the Obama administration's call for the release of the hikers, requesting that the Iranian government "exercise compassion."
"We believe strongly that there is no evidence to support any charge whatsoever," said Clinton, speaking in Berlin.
"As a mother my heart went out to all of them. I cannot imagine what it would feel like to know that your child was in prison for now 100 days with very little contact between you and them," Clinton said.
"I told them that we are doing everything we possibly could to get Shane and Joshua and Sarah home. And we are exploring every angle. Obviously I would hope that the government of Iran would free them on humanitarian and compassionate basis and return them to their families," Clinton said.

Washington (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday "there are no negotiations taking place" between Washington and Iran on the idea of exchanging three U.S. hikers held in Iran for Iranians being held in the U.S.
The idea was floated by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a television interview, but Clinton said: "It is hard to know what the Iranian president meant" by his remark.

(CNN) -- In a heartfelt letter to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the mothers of three American hikers held in Iran said they have applied for visas to visit Iran and ask to meet with him in Tehran.
"We would be honored to tell you in person who our children are and why they do not deserve to continue to be held in detention without any contact with the outside world," said the letter released Monday from Cindy Hickey, Norah Shourd and Laura Fattal.
Their children, Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal, respectively, were detained in Iran on July 31 when they accidentally strayed across an unmarked border into Iran while on a hiking trip in Iraq, according to their families. They are being held on espionage charges.
"Shane, Sarah and Josh have now been detained for 200 days," the letter said. "During that time, they have not been allowed to make a single telephone call to us or write us one letter. For more than three months, we have had no independent information about our children's physical health or their state of mind."
The hikers' most recent consular visit from Swiss diplomats was October 29, according to the letter. The families said they have asked an Iranian attorney to represent the three, but the lawyer was refused access to them.
"We struggle to understand why our children have been denied any contact with us," the letter said. "We cannot explain why for more than six months, Iran has not found it in its heart to demonstrate magnanimity toward our children -- young travelers whose only mistake appears to have been to lose their way on a hiking vacation."
Hickey, Shourd and Fattal said they applied January 6 for visas to visit Iran "in the hope of seeing our children in Evin Prison."
Earlier this month in a nationally televised interview, Ahmadinejad said negotiations were ongoing regarding the hikers but appeared to float the idea of a prisoner swap.
"We don't like anyone in jail or in prison, but these people have violated our borders and it has a defined penalty," he said, adding there are Iranians "languishing within American jails. ... We are approaching this from a humanitarian perspective and see how it goes."
But U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said there were no negotiations taking place between the United States and Iran regarding the hikers, and "it is hard to know what the Iranian president meant."
"We believe they're being unjustly detained and that they should be released without further delay," Clinton has said of the hikers.
Two Belgians who were recently detained for three months after being arrested while visiting Iran said in January they had had "some contact" with the three Americans and were "deeply concerned about their well-being."
"We were freed without a trial and hope that the hikers will be freed as soon as possible," Idesbald van den Bosch and Vincent Boon Falleur said in a statement. "We do not know the current conditions of their detention since we left Evin Prison on December 8, 2009. At that point, [the three] were still in solitary confinement."
The Belgians said their detention was psychologically stressful "especially during interrogation and solitary confinement."
In their letter to Ahmadinejad, the hikers' mothers quoted Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who this month also urged Iran to free the three.
"You too are a parent, Mr. President," the letter said. "Surely you understand the depth of our distress, and the hopelessness we feel after appealing to you time and again to show our children the compassion they deserve, irrespective of their land of birth. We hope you will look favorably on our request this time and restore our faith in human kindness."

Hikers' mothers return to U.S. without children

New York (CNN) -- The mothers of three American hikers detained in Iran made an emotional return to the United States on Saturday after visiting their children in Tehran for the first time in 10 months.
"The pain of having to leave Tehran without our children is almost more than we can bear," Cindy Hickey, mother of Shane Bauer, said after the women arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. "Our greatest hope was to bring our children home with us where they belong.
"We will hope and pray that the Iranian authorities will now find it in their hearts to resolve our children's case and release them without delay."
Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, were detained in July. Their families say the three accidentally strayed across an unmarked border while on a hiking trip in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Nora Shourd, mother of Sarah, said the women were able to spend about 10 hours over two days with their children -- their first real contact with them since their detainment. The hikers made a brief phone call home March 9 and have had access to a few letters and messages sent by relatives, friends and supporters.
"We're satisfied that our children are being well-treated and extremely relieved to see for ourselves that they're in reasonable health after their long period of confinement," Nora Shourd said. "Nonetheless, the emotional strain on them and the loneliness is very difficult and they told us they just cannot understand why they're still in jail."
The three Americans have not been formally charged, although Tehran has said they will face trial on espionage charges.
Alex Fattal, brother of Josh, told CNN Saturday that the three hikers are "innocent, they're innocuous and they need to come home."
Before their trip, the mothers had requested meetings with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but those meetings did not take place, according to the hikers' attorney.
The women declined to take questions from reporters gathered at the airport. Laura Fattal, mother of Josh, said, "We are literally exhausted and just too overwhelmed by the emotions of this trip."

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- The release of American hiker Sarah Shourd has been "canceled" because the judicial process has not been completed, a prosecutor said Friday, according to the semiofficial Iranian Labour News Agency.

Iranian officials had said Thursday that Shourd, one of three American hikers held in Iran for more than a year, would be released Saturday.

Iran releases American hiker, lawyer says

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Iranian authorities released American Sarah Shourd on Tuesday from the Iranian prison where she has been held since July 2009, her lawyer told CNN.
Masoud Shafii said he was with Shourd when she was released from Evin Prison and that bail had been posted.
Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told state-run television that Shourd's "representatives" paid her bail -- set at $500,000 -- to an Iranian bank in Muscat, Oman, after which a judge ordered her release Tuesday.
"We decided to set her free with a $500,000 bail out.... It was paid in Muscat. She can leave Iran if she wants to," Dolatabadi said.
A diplomat at the Swiss embassy told Press TV that Shourd would be leaving Iran later Tuesday but her travel plans were not immediately clear. The United States and Iran do not have formal relations, and Switzerland serves as the "protecting power" for Washington in Tehran.
Shourd, 32, was detained along with fellow U.S. citizens Shane Bauer, 28, and Josh Fattal, 28, after they allegedly strayed across an unmarked border into Iran while hiking in Iraq's Kurdistan region.
The three were accused of spying, a charge the United States denies.
Dolatabadi said Tuesday that Bauer, who is Shourd's fiance, and Fattal will remain in jail until their trial.
Iran had said Shourd would be freed once the $500,000 bail was paid. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley made it clear Washington would play no role in paying the bail.
A judge decided to allow Shourd to be released on bail because of her medical condition, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported Sunday, citing Dolatabadi.
Shourd had a pre-existing gynecological problem, and her family says she now also has a lump in her breast, according to Shafii.
Iranian officials have apparently changed their stance on Shourd's release several times since last week. Iranian officials had announced Thursday that Shourd would be released on Saturday, at the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
But state media announced Friday that the release had been called off because legal procedures had not yet been resolved.
Some analysts said it was not a coincidence that Shourd's release comes as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is about to attend the U.N. General Assembly's meeting later this month.
"I think President Ahmadinejad really wanted to use this as a way of building up a store of goodwill just before he comes to New York," said Gary Sick, a professor at Columbia University and a former National Security Council Iran analyst.

"I want to really offer my thanks to everyone in the world, all of the governments, all of the people that have been involved. And I especially and particularly want to address President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad and all the Iranian officials, the religious leaders, and thank them for this humanitarian gesture," Shourd said on Press TV before leaving Iran for Oman.
"I am grateful. I am very humbled by this moment," she said of her release after 14 months in Tehran's Evin Prison.
Her attorney, Masoud Shafii, said he was with a smiling Shourd when she was released from the prison Tuesday afternoon and that bail had been posted.
She was handed over to Swiss authorities. The United States and Iran do not have formal relations, and Switzerland serves as the "protecting power" for Washington in Tehran.
