This study focused on individuals who have elected to spend a significant amount of time living in transit without the benefit of friends or family in the immediate vicinity. This population was used in order to advance the experience for an adult’s growth, development, and general well being. The hypotheses for this study immerged from research on the experience of psychological resilience. Since little has been written about a population who self-selected to suspend their long-term relationships for an extended period of time, and since this study was consequently designed for exploratory purposes, in this section I offer a post-hoc discussion of the data in addition to reviewing the hypotheses presented. I will begin by discussing attachment theory and object relations theories as they pertain to the backpacking population and the hypotheses posed for this study. I will then discuss in more depth this population’s experience of relationships and time alone, and the unique population utilized for this study, the long-term Chinese backpacker.
