HONG KONG: TWO-DAY MASTER CLASS
Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb
Sunday, January 16, 2011 -- Monday, January 17, 2011
Class limit: 17 students
Fee for Sunday only: US$300
Fee for both Sunday and Monday: US$400
To reserve a spot in the workshop: Acceptance by Alex and Rebecca and then nonrefundable deposit of equivalent of US$100
Workshop producer: Yvonne Liu
Sunday: 9:30 – 18:00
Monday session: 11:00-16:00

Through group portfolio reviews, discussions, presentations, and an editing exercise, this one-day or two-day intensive workshop will help photographers begin to understand their own distinct way of seeing the world.

A workshop for serious amateurs and professionals alike, this one-day or two-day workshop will begin on Sunday morning with reviews of each photographer's work, a process that will serve as a jumping off point for a larger discussion about various photographic issues. Alex and Rebecca, a creative team who often edit projects, books, and exhibitions together (including their joint book and upcoming museum exhibition, "Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba";), will explore with the class a series of topics, including the process of photographing spontaneously and intuitively; how to edit photographs intuitively; the practical realities of the magazine and art worlds; the emotional and psychological implications of working in color vs. black and white; the difference between images in a book and images on the wall; and how long-term projects can evolve into books and exhibitions. Participants should be prepared to ask questions, as these concerns will help shape the ultimate direction of the workshop.

The end of the first day’s session on Sunday will be a presentation, called “Together and Apart: A Slide Talk by Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb.” Alex and Rebecca will present a variety of work, including a selection of photographs from their joint book, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba. They will discuss other bodies of work as well, including some books they’ve worked on together –– such as Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names (photographs by Alex; photo-edited by Rebecca) –– and some books they’ve worked on individually, such as The Glass Between Us (Rebecca’s first book), which explores the complicated relationship between people and animals in cities.

The optional Monday session will feature presentations that address the process of working in a series on a long-term projects, including how to sequence and shape a body of work to bring out the strength of a project, how to work with a designer on the layout and cover of a book, being on press with a book, the relationship between text and images in a book. There will also be the presentation: “Street Photographers and Others.” Optional: participants can bring up to 40 small prints of one or two series, or from a long-term project they are passionate about.

TO APPLY TO THE WORKSHOP: Please email 10 small jpgs (72dpi; 8 inches across on the longest side), ideally from one or two series, or from one long-term project. For photographers who don’t work in a series, please send a selection of your strongest work. Please email to Rebecca at: rebeccanorriswebb@yahoo.com
After acceptance to the workshop, Yvonne Liu, the workshop producer, will let you know how to pay for the workshop.

PLEASE BRING TO THE WORKSHOP:
All participants should bring about 30 PRINTS (Please bring prints, NOT digital files. It's fine if these are small work prints, (around 4x6 or 5x7 or 8x10 inches). The main focus is the image, NOT the quality of the print. But it’s also fine to bring larger finished prints if you have them.) Alex and Rebecca recommend bringing prints from one or two series, or a selection of images from a long-term project. If you don’t work in a series, bring 30 of your strongest images. They would like to see work that represents who you are as a photographer, not just work done to please an editor or teacher.

For those attending both Sunday and Monday sessions: It’s optional to bring up to 40 small prints from a single long-term project.

NOTE ABOUT THE PRINTS FOR THE SUNDAY PORTFOLIO REVIEW: Photographers should take the time to create as strong a selection of their photographic prints as they can have for the portfolio review on Sunday. However, Alex and Rebecca can advise photographers at any level or from any photographic background –– from beginners to photographers with many years experience, from magazine photographers to art photographers, from serious amateurs to professionals.

基本的交流就够了,重要的是带自己的作品过去被指点:D
我最初还很紧张,怕专业术语太多呢,买了一本摄影专用词典,结果根本没有用上
