MANILA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude on the Richter scale rocked central Philippines 11:49 a. m. local time Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The epicenter of the quake, which is of tectonic origin, struck from a depth of 46.6 kilometers, was traced 70 kilometers north of Dumaguete city, Negros Oriental. Tremors were felt in the provinces of Negros, Aklan, Iloilo, Antique, Cebu and Zamboanga del Norte.
One child was killed, according to a report filed by local radio station DZMM. There were no reports of damage yet.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued tsunami alert level 2 for the coastal areas in Cebu and Negros. It advises coastal residents to be alert for tsunami.
