谢谢你们!!!:I:I:I

Dear Brother's of the Sky,

It is very important that we all learn from today incident at Shek O. I am sitting here writing this feeling very relieved that a fellow pilot is safe after an incident that could have killed him. Unfortunately, I have seen similar things happen several times at Shek O and it is now crucial that we all take note of what happened and seek to prevent a reoccurrence. In a similar incident 3 years ago we needed to call a helicopter to lift off a badly injured pilot who spent several weeks in hospital.

I believe that several factors contributed to the incident. These are: -

Taking off in strong conditions
Failure to take note of the warnings given and the weather forecast, which predicted stronger winds.
Failure to recognize the dangers of strong winds once airborne.
Failure to speed bar away
No working radio to receive advice
Using big ears in the wrong circumstances ?big ears does not aid penetration and may make you go slower.
Staying with the glider for the water landing ?the recommended procedure is to jump out of the harness before you hit the water.

I was the other pilot flying today and it was evident that the winds were increasing. I advised others of the conditions and stated that on ake-off?you should move away from the ridge at once and stay away. It was my assessment that conditions were marginal: you could fly if you stayed away from the ridge and had the speed bar ready. Like always the decision to take off rests with the individual pilot.

Having seen the pilot launch it was soon obvious that conditions were changing; therefore I opted to land at once. He went vertically up, made little penetration and had to work hard to escape the ridge. This he did and moved south towards the trig area.

Meanwhile my approach to the beach was almost vertical as the wind gusted to 25 plus on the beach! I had to sit directly over the fence waiting for the sink to come on.

I was unable to warn the pilot that conditions were strengthening, as he did not appear to have a radio. In any case I saw him set up for landing and he appeared to have things under control. He then turned back ?at this point he climbed again and in no time was going backwards. He then opted for Big Ears ? this caused him to sink a little, but appeared from my position to bring him closer to the ridge. I last saw him turning west and heading over the back in the Stanley direction.

I heard from the police that the pilot was recovered from the water attached to his glider and floating. I also heard he was wrapped in his lines. He will no doubt tells us all later.

Guys, please remember that Shek O is a potentially dangerous site if the winds pick up. Remember to fly within your limits. I hope the pilot posts his observations in order that others can gain from his unfortunate experience.

Regards,

Steve
